Ever find yourself in a pinch deciding what to create last minute for dinner?
Sometimes you think you have ALL of the fixin's and then come to find out you don't have the buns!
These buns are delicious, QUICK to make (there is no rise time) and you definitely have all of the ingredients laying around. You can even play around with the ingredients if you don't have them all! (I have substitutions!)
Here's what you'll need:
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 Tablespoons Active Dry Yeast
•1 Cup + 2 Tablespoons Warm Water
•1/4 Cup Sugar (I use Organic Cane but,
you can also use granulated or other sugar substitutes)
• 1/3 Cup Bland Oil (Vegetable Oil is tasteless)
•1 Large Egg OR Egg Substitute Mixture
( 1 1/2 Table Spoons Vegetable Oil + 1 1/2 tablespoons water + 1 teaspoon baking powder)
•1 Teaspoon Salt
• 3 to 3 1/2 cups bread flour (you can also use all purpose)
TOPPING INGREDIENTS:
• 1 Egg Yolk OR A few Table Spoons of Melted Butter
•1 Tablespoon Water (if using egg yolk)
•Sesame Seeds
DIRECTIONS:
Using a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add Oil and Sugar of choice; allow to sit for 5 minutes. The yeast will get nice and frothy! Once frothy, add the egg (or egg substitute) , salt and enough bread flour to form a SOFT dough.
Once mixed pour onto a lightly floured surface. Knead your dough until smooth and stretchy. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook if you prefer not to knead by hand.
Divide dough into 8 pieces, shape each piece into a ball. Space them out onto a parchment lined cookie sheet.
Preheat Oven to 425 Degrees.
Cover your dough with a tea towel while oven preheats. Allow dough to rest for 10 minutes before setting in oven.
Brush your buns with an egg wash OR butter, then sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Bake until golden brown, 8-14 minutes. Every oven is different, once you get to the 12 minute mark I would keep a close eye on the buns.
NOTES:
Buns can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days on the counter or 5 days in the fridge.
You can also freeze these buns for up to one month!
